Safeguarding Adults Glossary

The Warrington Safeguarding Adults Board glossary provides clear explanations of common terms used in adult safeguarding practice. It brings together terms from legislation, statutory guidance, local Warrington safeguarding processes and recognised best practice, helping practitioners and partner agencies use consistent language when discussing safeguarding concerns, enquiries, advocacy, mental capacity, risk management and multi-agency working.

The glossary has been developed with input from Warrington Adult Social Care, the Social Care Institute for Excellence, Speak Up Advocacy and the Warrington Safeguarding Adults Board. This multi-agency input helps ensure the glossary reflects shared understanding, clear practice language and the importance of promoting people’s rights, wishes and wellbeing in safeguarding adults practice.

This resource is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all safeguarding terminology. Where terms relate to local practice or non-statutory processes, this is identified, and practitioners should continue to apply statutory duties in line with relevant legislation and statutory guidance.
